Section B
Directions: There are several passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice.
Passage One
Questions 47 to 51 are based on the following passage.
My formula for staying young is simple: concentrate on the part of you that's young and growing your brain. Keep your mind awake and you'll stay young all over. These are exciting times. Take an interest in the world around you, and make a point of learning at least one new thing every day.
Regardless of your age, it's not too late to make your life more interesting. I know a housewife with no previous knowledge who made herself into an outstanding industrial designer; I know a retired electrical engineer who has become a highly paid ceramic artist.
Get over the notion that you are ever too old to go back to school. I know a man who entered medical college at 70. He got his degree with honors and became an eminent physician. Another man went to law school at 71 and is now an active lawyer.
In spite of years, staying young is easy for those who live in the future. You can do it if you care enough to try. Keep your mind awake and active; that's the only youth elixir (万灵药) guaranteed to work.
47.
The statement that our brain remains young and growing regardless of age is ________.
A) an impossibility
B) a scientific fact
C) a supposition
D) a ridiculous conclusion
48.
It is wrong to ________.

B) keep one's mind awake
C) try to stay young
D) get one's degree with honors

The passage states that a man who entered college at 70 became ________.
A) an active lawyer
B) an electric engineer
C) a distinguished doctor
D) a highly paid ceramic artist
50.
The only youth elixir is to ________.
A) go back to school
B) forget one's own age
C) keep in touch with young people
D) keep one's mind awake and active
51.
All of the following statements are true EXCEPT that ________.
A) human brain never gets old with age
B) every person should take up a new occupation when he becomes old
C) staying young is not difficult if one is willing to try
D) there is always something to learn if you have an interest in what's going on around you
Passage Two
Questions 52 to 56 are based on the following passage.
Daniel Defoe wrote the story of Robinson Crusoe suggested by the experience of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish sailor who quarreled with his captain and at his own request was set on an island 300 miles off the coast of Chile. There he managed to survive for five years. Rescued and brought back to England, he became a nine day's wonder, and Defoe went to Bristol to talk with the man. He thought over the story for seven years. By that time Selkirk, the brutish, rude sailor, had become the resourceful, courageous Robinson Crusoe. Thousands of imagined details gave the tale the illusion of reality. Defoe was the first author to use this method, and none since has ever used it more masterfully.

D) Alexander Selkirk became a resourceful, courageous sailor after he came back to England.
56.

A) omitted
B) based on Selkirk's real life story
C) written entirely under the guidance of the sailor
D) written as if they had really happened

Y (for YES) if the statement agrees with the information given in the passage;
N (for NO) if the statement contradicts the information given in the passage;

Why Are Frogs Disappearing?
When was the last time you saw a frog? Chances are, if you live in a city, you have not seen one for some time. Even in wet areas once filled with frogs and toads, it is becoming less and less easy to find those slimy, hopping and sometimes poisonous members of the animal kingdom. All over the world, and even in remote parts of Australia, frogs are losing the ecological battle for survival, and biologists are at a loss to explain their disappearance. Are amphibians (两栖动物) simply oversensitive to changes in the ecosystem? Could it be that their rapid decrease in numbers is signaling some coming environmental disaster for us all? This frightening situation is in part the consequence of a striking increase over the last quarter century in the development of once natural areas of wet marshland (沼泽地); home not only to frogs but to all manner of wildlife. However, as yet, there are no obvious reasons why certain frog species are disappearing from rainforests in Australia that have hardly been touched by human hand. The mystery is unsettling to say the least, for it is known that amphibian species are extremely sensitive to environmental variations in temperature and dampness levels. The danger is that planet Earth might not only lose a vital link in the ecological food chain (frogs keep populations of otherwise harmful insects at manageable levels), but we might be increasing our output of air pollutants to levels that may have already become irreversible (不可取消的;不可逆转的). Frogs could be intentionally warning us of a catastrophe.
An example of a species of frog that, as far as is known, has become extinct (灭绝的), is the platypus (鸭嘴兽) frog. Like the well-known Australian mammal (哺乳动物) it was named after, it exhibited some very strange behavior; instead of giving birth to tadpoles (蝌蚪) in the water, it raised its young within its stomach. The baby frogs were actually born from out of their mother's mouth. Discovered in 1981, less than ten years later the frog had completely gone from the crystal clear waters of Booloumba Creek near Queensland's Sunshine Coast. Unfortunately, this freak (反常) of nature is not the only frog species to have been lost in Australia. Since the 1970s, no less than eight others have suffered the same fate.
One theory that seems to fit the facts concerns the reduction of the ozone layer, a well documented phenomenon which has led to a sharp increase in ultraviolet radiation (紫外线辐射) levels. The ozone layer is meant to shield the Earth from UV rays, but increased radiation may be having a greater effect upon frog populations than previously believed. Another theory is that worldwide temperature increases are upsetting the breeding (养育;培育) cycles of frogs.
