It is twice the size of the Merchandise Mart in Chicago, and has three times the floor space of the Empire State Building in New York. The National Capitol could fit into any one of the five wedge-shaped (楔形的) sections. There are very few people throughout the United States who do not have some knowledge of the Pentagon. However, relatively few people have had the opportunity to visit.
The Pentagon is virtually a city in itself. Approximately 23,000 employees, both military and civilian, contribute to the planning and execution of the defense of the country. These people arrive daily from Washington D. C. and its suburbs over approximately 30 miles of access highways, including express bus lanes and one of the newest subway systems in the country. While in the building, they tell time by 4,200 clocks, drink from 691 water fountains, utilize 284 rest rooms, consume 4,500 cups of coffee, 1,700 pints of milk and 6,800 soft drinks prepared or served by a restaurant staff of 230 persons and dispensed in 1 dinging room, 2 cafeterias, 6 snack bars, and an outdoor snack bar. Passage Two
Questions 53 to 57 are based on the following passage.
Psychologists Juliette H. W. and Tom H. A. at Leiden University wanted to see if the results of previous studies comparing the recall of television and print news information in educated adults would apply to children as well. All the earlier studies found that adults remembered more of what they read than what they saw on television possibly in that adults were much freer to read the printed materials at their convenience.
To do this, the researchers designed a study in which 152 children between ages 10 and 12 were presented with five children's news stories, either in their original televised form or in a verbatim (逐字地) printed version. The result was that children who watched the television news reports recalled more of what they viewed than the children who read the printed versions without photos or illustrations. There were some differences, however, the more proficient readers remembered more from either medium than the less proficient readers. Also, the children who watched the televised version recalled more items of information that were presented both verbally and visually than they did with those that were presented only verbally, without accompanying pictures.
Noting that the superiority of television as a news medium for children proved to be of a more general nature than they had expected — it was not restricted to certain subgroups of children — the researchers were also pleased to see that the superiority of television was not confined to the "school situation in which children may consume the news knowing that they will be questioned about the information".
"The results of this study," the researchers conclude, "are 'good news' for children, because in the home situation they rely primarily on the medium that can serve them most effectively. For instructional settings, the study suggests that television news that is adapted to children's level of understanding and that effectively uses television's ability to convey news both verbally and visually may be an effective aid to the teacher."
53.
What is the main idea of the passage?
A) TV will become a substitute for reading in the future instructional settings.
B) Children can remember more of what they are taught from TV than reading.
C) Adults cannot recall as much what they view from TV as children.
D) Children will enjoy more freedom to watch TV either at home or at school.
54.
Why did adults remember more of what they read than what they saw on TV?
A) Because they could take advantage of the freedom to read printed materials.
B) Because reading could leave a deeper impression on adults than TV items.
C) Because there were more advantages in reading than watching TV.
D) Because television deprived adults of more freedom than reading.
55.
Which statement is true according to the study of psychologist Juliette H. W. and Tom H. A.?
A) The superiority of TV as a news medium made little difference to the proficient readers.
B) There were also some differences among children who received the news in the form of TV.
C) The superiority of the televised form would apply to adults as well as the subgroups of children.
D) The advantage of television was exactly the same as what the researchers had expected.
56.
Which of the following words conveys the same meaning as the word "illustrations" in Para.2?
A) Explanations.
B) Definitions.
C) Pictures.
D) Illusions.
57.
What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A) The verbal commentary and the visual pictures convey more or less the same information.
B) Children are free to watch television in the home situation.
C) Television can better serve the children at home than at school.
D) The proper use of films and videos in the children's classrooms is encouraged.

China is to blacklist cities that fail to reach national air quality standards and penalize them by warning off investors. The State Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) will also control construction projects that could worsen air pollution in the worst-offending cities. "The list will be announced regularly to warn cities of deteriorating air quality," the Xinhua News Agency quoted Zhang Lijun, SEPA's deputy director, as telling a forum on air quality.
China's economy has grown into the world's seventh-largest during more than two decades of economic reform, but its growth has come at the expense of the environment. China is the world's second-largest producer of greenhouse gases. Large Chinese cities are typically choked by car exhaust, factory emissions and construction dust, and pollution is compounded by coal-burning heating plants lit during the winter. There would be serious consequences for human health if emissions of sulfur dioxide were not curbed. SEPA was drafting a program focused on cleaning up coal power plants. With coal used to generate more than two-thirds of the country's power, China's emissions of sulfur dioxide were the highest in the world last year, causing acid rain across 30 percent of the country. Being the world's fastest-growing car market, China would write regulations aimed at curbing auto pollution into the country's "11th Five Year Plan", which will come into effect from 2006.
