Section B
Directions: There are several passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice.
Passage One
Questions 47 to 51 are based on the following passage.
Let us begin by saying what does not cause our dreams. Our dreams do not come from "another world". They are not messages from some outside source. They are not a look into the future, either.
All our dreams have something to do with our emotions, fears, longings, wishes, needs and memories. But something on the "outside" may affect what we dream. If a person is hungry, or tired, or cold, his dreams may include a feeling of this kind. If the covers on your body, such as a quilt or a blanket, have slipped off your bed, you may dream that you are sleeping or resting on the ice and snow. The material for the dream you will have tonight is likely to come from the experiences you have today.
So the subject of your dream usually comes from something that has effect on you while you are sleeping (feeling of cold, a noise, a discomfort, etc.) and it may also use your past experiences and the wishes and interests you have now. This is why very young children are likely to dream of fairies (仙女), older children of school examinations, hungry people of food, homesick soldiers of their families, and prisoners of freedom.
To show you how that is happening while you are asleep and how your wishes or needs can all be joined together in a dream, here is the story of an experiment. A man was asleep and the back of his hand was rubbed with a piece of absorbent cotton (脱脂棉). He would dream that he was in a hospital and his charming girl friend was visiting him, sitting on the bed and feeling gently his hand!
There are some scientists who have made a special study of why we dream, what we dream and what those dreams mean. Their explanation of dreams, though a bit reasonable, is not accepted by everyone, but it offers an interesting approach to the problem. They believe that dreams are mostly expressions of wishes that did not come true. In other words, a dream is a way of having your wishes carried out.
47.
Our dreams ________.
A) are simply messages from another world
B) are a curious look into the future
C) have little connection with our emotions, wishes or needs
D) are to some degree caused by some of our feelings
48.
If the covers have slipped off your bed, you may dream that ________.
A) something comfortable happens to you
B) you are staying in freezing surroundings
C) some people are making noise
D) you have nothing on at all
49.
When the back of a man's hand was rubbed with a piece of absorbent cotton in the experiment, he would dream that________ .
A) his hand was being struck by someone
B) his hand was gently touched by his sweetheart
C) his hand was badly hurt by something
D) somebody was wiping sweat off his body
50.
When a person feels hungry, he is likely to dream of ________.
A) wonderful fairies
B) lovely young girls
C) fine food and drinks
D) his family members
51.
Some scientists' explanation of dreams ________.
A) does not give an outlet for our wishes
B) gives us an exact answer to the problem
C) offers a meaningful approach to the problem
D) is widely accepted and thought highly of by the public
Passage Two
Questions 52 to 56 are based on the following passage.
No type of gun violence has generated public alarm in recent years like shootings in schools. In the last eight years, 206 students have lost their lives because of school-related gun violence.
Despite these tragedies, U.S. schools are generally very safe. A student's actual risk of being killed at school is small — less than one in a million. And violence in schools (like youth gun violence in general) actually has declined over the last eight years. There were fewer school-associated violent death incidents in the 1997–1998 school year (46 total) than in 1992–1993 (53 total).
However, the number of multiple-victim killings appears to have increased during those years. And parents, students and educators agree that even one school shooting is too many. So how can the community and schools prevent it from happening again?
Is Gun Control the Answer?
Gun Control advocates think that we could help prevent school shootings by making it tougher for young people to get guns. The following changes in state laws, they argue, would make it harder for guns to find their way into dangerous hands:
Child Access Prevention (CAP) Laws
CAP laws require that guns present at home be secured safely through either safe storage facilities or trigger locks. CAP laws hold gun owners responsible for how their guns are used. In the event that a minor improperly accesses a stored, loaded gun, the gun owner can be held criminally responsible.
Closing the Gun Show Loophole
The 1994 Brady Laws make it illegal for children under 21 to purchase handguns from licensed dealers, but a loophole still permits 18–21-year-olds to purchase handguns from private or unlicensed individuals.
Those who support these laws make the following arguments:
Under current laws, teenagers can find guns easily. A recent FBI study of 41 school shooters in 37 incidents revealed that attackers found it easy to get weapons. Most of the attackers were able to take guns from their homes or friends, buy them legally or illegally, or steal them. Some received guns as gifts from parents.
CAP laws appear to work. In states with CAP laws, accidental gun-related deaths for children dropped by 23 percent, according to research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1997.
Those who oppose the laws make the following arguments:
The government can't legally interfere with owners' rights, which are protected by the Second Amendment to the Constitution. The government should not legislate how people store guns in their home, or tell private gun collectors who they can sell guns to at gun shows.
It isn't fair to hold parents criminally responsible for acts committed by their children.
Studies don't prove that CAP laws work. The decrease in fatal firearm accidents among children has been nationwide, not only in the states with CAP laws. And the decrease had begun before CAP laws were passed.
Programs that teach children gun safety, such as the NRA's Eddie Eagle program, are more effective than laws in getting kids to behave safely around guns.
52.
According to the passage, violence in schools ________.
A) hasn't aroused public attention in recent years
B) threatens every student
C) led to more death incidents in 1998 than in 1993
D) has decreased in recent years
53.
We could help prevent school shootings by ________.
A) making it more difficult for young people to get guns
B) forbidding the storage of guns at home
C) asking the owners of guns to take full responsibility for how they use their guns
D) teaching children how to use guns
54.
The current laws make it possible ________.
A) for teenagers to get a gun
B) to control gun-related deaths
C) to interfere with gun owners' rights
D) to hold parents criminally responsible for acts committed by their children
55.
Some people who oppose CAP laws argue that ________.
A) the government shouldn't legally interfere with gun owners' rights
B) there are not any effective ways to control gun-related deaths
C) parents should be responsible for acts committed by their children
D) criminals should take responsibility for their acts
56.
The passage is mainly about ________.
A) the serious school-associated violent death incidents
B) how to keep criminals from getting guns
C) the debate over the effects of CAP laws
D) how to solve gun violence in schools

The Virgin Blue terminal at Melbourne airport was evacuated and at least 50 people transported to area hospitals complaining of dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and respiratory problems. At least 17 ambulances were sent to the airport to treat and transport the victims, many of whom were airport personnel. Many of the victims were treated and released from Northern Hospital later in the afternoon.
According to airport officials the problems began to surface shortly after 08:00 a.m. (local time) and the airport terminal was evacuated at about 10:00 a.m. A special team of Metropolitan Fire Brigade personnel were also sent to the airport in an attempt to identify any hazardous substance that may have been released. An unconfirmed report said that there was no noticeable smell from the so-far unidentified leak, although several people who had been affected said there was a strange odor shortly before they began to feel ill.
"The source has not been located or identified," a Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokesman said. "All (chemical detection) readings are showing zero." He said firefighters had spent the day testing everything they could, but found nothing. The cause of the leak that forced the terminal closure remains a mystery, fire and medical authorities said. The airport terminal was reopened shortly after 18:00 local time.
An investigation into the incident and response thereto continues at the time of this report. There will be Watch Emergency Net News for additional information if/when it becomes available...
