In the second half of each year, many powerful storms are born in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean seas. Of these, only about half a dozen generate the strong, circling winds of 75 miles per hour or more that give them hurricane status, and several usually make their way to the coast. There they cause millions of dollars of damage, and bring death to large numbers of people.
The great storms that hit the coast start as innocent circling disturbances hundreds — even thousands — of miles out to sea. As they travel aimlessly over water warmed by the summer sun, they are carried westward by the trade winds. When conditions are just right, warm, moist air flows in at the bottom of such a disturbance, moves upward through it and comes out at the top. In the process, the moisture in this warm air produces rain, and with it the heat is converted to energy in the form of strong winds. As the heat increases, the young hurricane begins to swirl in a counter-clock wise motion.
The average life of a hurricane is only about nine days, but it contains almost more power than we can imagine. The energy in the heat released by hurricane's rainfall in a single day would satisfy the entire electrical needs of the United States for more than six months. Water, not wind, is the main source of death and destruction in a hurricane. A typical hurricane brings 6 to 12-inch downpours resulting in sudden floods.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if we all could work at any time of day? Now several shops are experimenting with a more flexible work timetable for their employees. It seems to be successful.
Both late sleepers and early risers find the fixed hours of a nine-to-five work day a problem. Now there is an answer that seems to please them both. Employers of over 500 shops, organizations and government agencies in the United States are arranging their work hours so that they can satisfy the employees' needs. It's called "flexible time" and it means, for example, the employees can start working at any time during the first three hours their office is open and leave after completing their required daily working time, which is usually eight hours. Early risers can begin work at seven a.m., finish at three p.m. and still have their daylight time for shopping, picking up children at school, or enjoying themselves with various kinds of games. Later sleepers need not report for work until 10 a.m. — but they must stay on their job until six in the evening.
An American bank official says, "Our employees like the system. Lateness has been almost got rid of. Fewer people are absent and productivity and morale have risen."

D) Suddenly.

Section B
Directions: Read the following passage. After reading it, you are required to complete the outline below it. You should write your answers briefly in no more than 3 words.
(*Colour*)
Life is colorful. But Chinese and Americans are quite different in treating colors. A Chinese bride wears red to wedding ceremony. Red is the symbol of luck in China. When they wear white to funerals, white is regarded as the symbol of heritage of filial(孝顺的) duty. No Americans think there's something to do with red and luck. But Americans wear black to funerals and might be offended by a Chinese wearing white. An American bride will wear white when they get married, Americans consider white as the symbol of purity and innocence.
(*No Free Lunch*)
When Americans eat out, they often calculate each person's share of the bill down to the last penny. By contrast, in China one person is likely to pick up the entire bill. It doesn't necessarily mean that Chinese are more generous. Chinese stress mutually beneficial relationships and know that the next time someone else will pay: What goes around comes around.
(*Family Size*)
If allowed, Chinese would have as many children as possible, whereas Americans prefer only one or two — or even none. In fact, many avoid children altogether, counting upon their career or pension to act as a surrogate for the love of children and grandchildren. Some Americans avoid even marriage, and some Americans who do marry get divorced, largely because of the privacy of individual freedom over social and marital responsibility.
