Being airborne doesn't mean that the footwork is over. Many birds also use their feet to fly. For the American coot (水鸟) to get off the ground, it must make a running start. Like an airplane rolling down the runway, a coot runs across the surface of the water until it reaches flight speed, then lifts off and flaps (拍) away high above the trees.
Some other birds use their feet to slow down in flight. If you stop pedaling your bicycle when you're going downhill, you'll eventually slow down when you reach the bottom. But you still need brakes. Without brakes, flying birds and speeding bicycles can't stop fast enough.
One bird that uses its feet as air brakes is the graylag (灰色雁) goose. When this bird comes in for a landing, it swings its feet like small parachutes (降落伞). The rushing air pushes against the broad, webbed feet and slows the goose down, allowing it to make a smooth landing in the water.
Flying is a tough business that requires lots of energy. Because birds work hard when they fly, they get hot. And if they can't cool down, they overheat like a car on a hot summer day. During flight, hot blood flows into their feet from the body. The wind cools the feet off, and the feet cool the blood before it returns to the bird's body.
36.

A) getting out
B) flapping away
C) rolling down
D) speeding up
37.
The American coot usually takes off from the .
A) ground
B) water
C) runway
D) tree
38.
The writer compares a bird's feet to during landing.
A) a pedal
B) a bicycle
C) a parachute
D) a brake
39.
According to the passage, the American coot and the graylag goose are similar in .
A) the way they take off
B) the way they land in water
C) using feet to control flight speed
D) giving up the use of wings
40.
Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A) Bird's feet can cool the blood in its body.
B) Bird's flight is more than just feathers and wings.
C) Bird's landing is something like speeding bicycles.
D) Bird's energy can be recovered while overheating.
In the second half of each year, many powerful storms are born in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean seas. Of these, only about half a dozen generate the strong, circling winds of 75 miles per hour or more that give them hurricane status, and several usually make their way to the coast. There they cause millions of dollars of damage, and bring death to large numbers of people.
The great storms that hit the coast start as innocent circling disturbances hundreds — even thousands — of miles out to sea. As they travel aimlessly over water warmed by the summer sun, they are carried westward by the trade winds. When conditions are just right, warm, moist air flows in at the bottom of such a disturbance, moves upward through it and comes out at the top. In the process, the moisture in this warm air produces rain, and with it the heat is converted to energy in the form of strong winds. As the heat increases, the young hurricane begins to swirl in a counter-clock wise motion.
The average life of a hurricane is only about nine days, but it contains almost more power than we can imagine. The energy in the heat released by hurricane's rainfall in a single day would satisfy the entire electrical needs of the United States for more than six months. Water, not wind, is the main source of death and destruction in a hurricane. A typical hurricane brings 6 to 12-inch downpours resulting in sudden floods.
41.
When is an ordinary tropical storm called a hurricane?
A) When it begins in the Atlantic and Caribbean seas.
B) When it hits the coastline.
C) When it is more than 75 miles wide.
D) When its winds reach 75 miles per hour.
42.
What is the worst thing about hurricanes?
A) The destructive effects of hurricanes.
B) The heat they release.
C) That they last about nine days on the average.
D) Their strong winds.
43.
The counter-clock wise swirling of the hurricane is brought about by ________.
A) the low-pressure area in center of the storm
B) the force of waves of water
C) the trade winds
D) the increasing heat
44.
Apparently the word "downpour" means ________.
A) heavy rainfall
B) dangerous waves
C) the progress of water to the hurricane center
D) the energy produced by the hurricane
45.
How long is the average life of a hurricane?
A) 19 days.
B) 22 days.
C) 9 days.
D) 10 days.
Section B
Directions: Read the following passage. After reading it, you are required to complete the outline below it. You should write your answers briefly in no more than 3 words.
(*Colour*)
Life is colorful. But Chinese and Americans are quite different in treating colors. A Chinese bride wears red to wedding ceremony. Red is the symbol of luck in China. When they wear white to funerals, white is regarded as the symbol of heritage of filial(孝顺的) duty. No Americans think there's something to do with red and luck. But Americans wear black to funerals and might be offended by a Chinese wearing white. An American bride will wear white when they get married, Americans consider white as the symbol of purity and innocence.
(*No Free Lunch*)
When Americans eat out, they often calculate each person's share of the bill down to the last penny. By contrast, in China one person is likely to pick up the entire bill. It doesn't necessarily mean that Chinese are more generous. Chinese stress mutually beneficial relationships and know that the next time someone else will pay: What goes around comes around.
(*Family Size*)
If allowed, Chinese would have as many children as possible, whereas Americans prefer only one or two — or even none. In fact, many avoid children altogether, counting upon their career or pension to act as a surrogate for the love of children and grandchildren. Some Americans avoid even marriage, and some Americans who do marry get divorced, largely because of the privacy of individual freedom over social and marital responsibility.
