Men and women evolved over a 450 000 year period known as the stone age. It was during this period that our psyches developed.. Civilisation is at the most 10 000 years old, and only then in some parts of the world. We can see that the mind has evolved to fit into a world very different from that in which we live.

During this long period people lived in small groups. Women banded together within them, caring for children, cooking and gathering food. Whatever women did, they were also looking after children. Although the children had individual mothers, they were largely cared for by the group as much as by their original mother. Marriage had not yet been instituted. When a woman was heavily pregnant or otherwise indisposed, she and her children were dependent on other women in the group.

The female mind therefore has developed to be able to do two things at once. Look after children and gather food. Look after children and cook. Always caring for children and doing something else.

The female mind has evolved to develop strong bonds with other female members, on whom she would from time to time find herself dependent. Women generally need to be with other women for mutual support. We can see how quickly rapport develops between women who meet for the first time.

Women also had another important role, they had the important job of keeping the tribe together. The men served the women by bringing them food, providing shelter and protecting them. The women therefore strived to keep the men happy and sexually contented so they would not stray to other tribes and serve other women. They would also seduce any visiting man if possible, to get him to join the tribe. However, if the man was weak or dependent, they would not feel like seducing him. Once he was no longer able to hunt or protect, he was generally of little or no use. He was a burden and women found him unattractive.

When women mated with men, they looked for the strongest. The strongest in a primal sense. The strongest perhaps five percent would mate with say ninety per cent of the women. The weaker men would not mate regularly, at least not during ovulation. They would be useful however as men who would help care for the women and raise the children of the alpha males, so they may have been allowed to mated at lest fertile times of the month. Possibly after the alpha males had had their wicked way. All fertile women crowded around the alpha male. We see today that a woman automatically finds a man attractive if he has another woman on his arm, especially if she is pretty.

Women always resisted the advances of the less stronger men of the five per cent, hoping to catch with the stronger ones. As with animals, they ran away or tried to push them off. Shouted at them and gave them a hard time. Those who were persistent and confident got to mate. The weaker ones were weeded out.

Men had a different job within the tribe, they hunted, protected and built shelters. They trapped food and decided where and when they should move on. Hunting requires a very concentrated mind. A man may have had to hide up a tree for a week waiting for a deer to come by. He had only one shot with his bow and arrow. With that shot, everyone ate or everyone starved.

Men needed to predict where and when animals would be available for hunting. So the male mind began to become more future orientated.

Men protected, for this they had to be strong and needed to be focused. Fighting required complete concentration, one mistake and he was dead.

Men built shelters, so they needed to learn to improvise and adapt, something which requires singularity of purpose as well as concentration.

As we can see, men developed a mind which was highly concentrative, that could think ahead and be innovative. Most inventors are men.

Today we live in a world that does not accommodate these instinctual needs very well. Men need to fight to form a hierarchy and establish who is alpha, who is an alpha contender, who is a beta male. Women need to mate with the strongest only. They need to test men for strength.

It is difficult for both sexes in a modern world. Married women are tied into fidelity with one person who may be beta, something they are uncomfortable with. They will always have feelings for the alpha male. A man is taught that he must not show physical aggression towards other men, something he needs to do, to find his position within the mating hierarchy. And he cannot steal a woman off a weaker man. Women test men for strength by giving him a hard time, but while in the past he would show his sexual strength and subdue her, (much to her pleasure,) now he must agree with her because otherwise he gets thrown out of the house!.

To conclude: Before we can understand each other and resolve our differences, we must understand where we come from and recognise our primal urges for what they are.
