Former Trump Advisor Found Guilty

TRANSCRIPT

BBC News with Sue Montgomery. A jury has found Donald Trump's former trade adviser Peter Navarro guilty on two counts of contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena to give evidence on the storming of the US capitol in 2021. Gary Donahue reports from Washington.

Peter Navarro served as Donald Trump’s senior trade adviser throughout his administration, and has boasted of his part in a plan to overturn the election results on January, the 6th, 2021, calling it the Green Bay Sweep, a reference to a tactic of American football. But this trial was about his failure to comply with a congressional subpoena issued by House investigators, a criminal offense that can carry a year in prison and a fine of up to $100,000. Throughout the process, Navarro insisted he was protected by executive privilege, though that defense was dismissed by the judge before the trial began. Navarro is the second member of the Trump administration to face jail for failing to cooperate with Congress.

Police in London say there have been no confirmed sightings of a terrorist suspect who escaped from prison on Wednesday and that he may already have left the country. Daniel Khalifa was on remand awaiting trial and charges, including preparing an act of terrorism.

Sudden torrential rain has caused widespread flash flooding in Hong Kong. The territory's weather agency said the city saw the highest hourly rate of rain since records began. Here's Danny Vincent.

The sudden downpour of rain brought severe floods to parts of the city, turning roads to rivers, leaving commuters stranded on the streets and stuck in vehicles. Videos shared on social media showed a flooded underground railway station, water gushing down escalators, flooded platforms and buses swamped with water. One clip circulated on social media showed a woman swept away by a stream of fast flowing, muddy water, which pushed her down a road.
