TRANSCRIPT

Supporters of Peru's former left-wing President Pedro Castillo have blocked roads and set vehicles on fire as anti-government demonstrations spread across the country. Five people have now died in clashes with security forces since the protests began triggered by Mr. Castillo's impeachment last Wednesday. He was accused of corruption and detained for attempting to dissolve congress. He said he was kidnapped and humiliated.

100,000 babies in the UK are to have their DNA fully sequenced in a research project believed to be the biggest of its kind in the world. It aims to speed up the diagnosis of a large number of childhood conditions including cystic fibrosis. More details from our medical editor Fergus Walsh.

The whole genome sequencing project will screen for around 200 rare conditions. All of them will be treatable, so early intervention should mean better outcomes for children and in some cases it may save lives. Genomics England, which is leading the project, says it will restrict analysis to early onset conditions and it will be up to the children involved when they are adults to decide whether their genome should be further analyzed.

The first member of the best-selling pop group BTS is beginning mandatory military service in South Korea. Fans have been asked to stay away from the camp where Jin is based. In October, BTS ended months of speculation by announcing they would not seek an exemption. The group is scheduled to reform after all seven members have completed their national service.

A woman dubbed the “last Hawaiian princess” has died at the age of 96. Abigail Kawananakoa's ancestors were deposed by commercial settlers in the 19th century.
