◇TRANSCRIPT

Hello, this is BBC World News, I'm Ben Bland, the headlines.

President Trump has praised his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping as he tries to build international support for the US effort to halt North Korea's nuclear program. Mr. Trump says he has not ruled out military action.

In California a man has been shot dead by police after opening fire on several people in the city of San Diego. The government shot and wounded eight people before being confronted. Police say several people are still in a critical condition.

In the United States, tornadoes have ripped through Texas, leaving at least nine people dead, nearly 50 in hospital. Emergency services say they fear the death toll may rise. High winds and floods have also affected neighboring states.

Tributes have been paid to Ueli Steck, one of the most famous climbers in the world who's died on Mount Qomolangma. The 41 year old is believed to have fallen from a rock face while spending time acclimatizing at altitude.
